  • Dr Nigel Preston

    Nigel is an Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland and is the lead aquaculture technical expert for the company. With a PhD in Marine Biology and over 25 years of experience, he has held key roles, including Director General of WorldFish and Director of Aquaculture Research at CSIRO. Nigel has authored over 120 publications on coral reef ecology, fisheries ecology, aquaculture biology, genetics, nutrition and environmental management, and is a Fellow of the World Aquaculture Society. His work with Kenyan coastal communities and Mtoni Ltd has advanced sustainable mariculture and mangrove management, essential to the growth of Kenya's burgeoning mariculture sector.

  • Michael Ouya

    Michael Ouya is an Aquaculture Expert with over five years of experience managing large-scale, vertically integrated tilapia production across Kenya and Zambia. He holds an MSc in Sustainable Aquaculture from the University of Stirling and a BSc in Biology from the University of Bristol. Michael’s expertise spans hatchery ponds and lake operations, where he has successfully trained specialist teams and managed intensive aquaculture systems. His senior management roles at Victory Farms and Yalelo Zambia highlight his strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills, making him a key contributor to sustainable aquaculture initiatives in East Africa.

    Iain is an Aquaculture Development Consultant and the Founder of Mtoni Ltd. With a BE in Biochemical Engineering from UCL, he brings 9 years of expertise in coastal aquaculture in East Africa to the Team. Specializing in sustainable solutions, he has fostered key partnerships with government, NGO, and community stakeholders in marine conservation, fisheries, and aquaculture in Kenya. His consultancy expertise spans site selection, project feasibility, hatchery and grow-out design, and project evaluation and reporting for donors. Committed to grassroots empowerment, he has provided fish farming extension services, advocated for responsible ocean farming, and led workshops in sustainable mariculture production and mangrove conservation.

  • Brendan muli

    Brendan has over 22 years of expertise in coastal and marine aquaculture and is the Centre Manager of Kwetu Training Centre for Sustainable Development. He has a robust background in project management and has work for organisations such as the EU and USAID. Brendan has successfully led major initiatives, including the "Water to Wallet" project funded by the European Union and the Blue Biz project by the Mastercard Foundation. As Chairperson of the County Mangrove Management Committee for Kilifi County, he plays a pivotal role in advancing marine conservation and sustainable resource management in the Western Indian Ocean region.

  • Dr Melony Sellars

    Melony is Director, CEO of GENICS - a company that provides solutions to help understand and mitigate the risk of disease in global food production systems in order to maximise production efficiencies and make high quality products more affordable. She has 20 years’ experience in global aquaculture at CSIRO, specialising in shrimp aquaculture. She has extensive expertise in the application of novel biotech solutions for the aquaculture industry, particularly pathogen screening, genetics and breeding programs.

  • Dr David Mirera

    David is the Assistant Director of Mariculture Research and Development at KMFRI and is a leading expert in mariculture in Kenya and the Western Indian Ocean. He has pioneered innovations such as drive-in cages for mud crabs and the introduction of freshwater Nile tilapia into marine waters. He also successfully founded Kenya’s first genetic breeding program for salt-tolerant tilapia and was the first to demonstrate a positive growth correlation for tilapia with novel feed additive NovacqTM. David has significantly contributed to Kenya's aquaculture policy and led key community initiatives in milkfish and mud crab farming. A mentor to over 15 scientists, he has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers and plays a crucial role in regional aquaculture governance and research networks.
