OUR MISSION
East Africa’s coastal communities are facing the combined impacts of climate change, rapid human population increase and overexploitation of mangrove ecosystems. There is a critical need to arrest and reverse the degradation and destruction of mangrove ecosystems, whilst also generating sustainable sources of food and income.
Our mission is to develop the capabilities and capacity of East Africa's coastal communities by integrating sustainable and gender-inclusive mariculture enterprises with ongoing local mangrove conservation and restoration efforts. By implementing holistic, regenerative farming methods such as integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), we aim to minimize environmental impact while producing organic and nutritious aquatic products.
This will provide the communities with alternative livelihoods that are so urgently needed to prevent further declines in human health and escalating poverty, whilst also maintaining community commitments to sustaining the multiple benefits that mangrove ecosystems provide.
the ECONOMIC OPPOrTUNITY
Aquaculture is the fastest growing animal protein sector in the world with an annual production of 80 million tonnes valued at $242 billion. It now provides over 50% of global human fish consumption and this is predicted to increase to 62% by 2030.
Marine and estuarine aquaculture is the only drought-proof animal protein production sector in the world, with a greater capacity to adapt to climate change than any terrestrial livestock sector.
More than 100 million people depend on the aquaculture sector for their livelihoods with a predicted additional 76 million people to be employed in the sector by 2050, particularly in the developing world. Areas with the highest growth potential are in tropical regions and the East African coastline has been identified as a global hotspot for potential marine aquaculture growth.
There is huge potential for Kenya and its neighbours to apply modern sustainable mariculture technologies to enhance the food security, nutrition and equitable livelihoods of East African coastal communities without compromising the ecological health of adjacent mangroves and other marine ecosystems.
